A woman with Down syndrome who founded a dance school for people with disabilities has received an honorary doctorate.

Jen Blackwell from Chorley, Lancashire, founded Dance Syndrome in 2009 after finding she had no teaching opportunities.

Fifteen years later, it is a registered charity training dancers to teach classes.

Ms Blackwell, who holds a PhD in the arts from the University of Salford, where she regularly teaches workshops, said: “With the right support, anyone can dream, believe and achieve.”

The 42-year-old has always loved dancing, but when she decided she wanted to teach, she said there were no jobs for people with learning disabilities.

That’s why she decided to set up her own inclusive dance school with the help of her family, based on the principle that a disability should never be an obstacle to following your passion.

‘Driving force’

“Dance is a driving force for me,” said Ms. Blackwell.

“The University of Salford has helped me spread my message that everyone can enjoy moving their body in whatever way they choose.

“I feel so honored. Right now I’m living in the fast lane.”

Mrs Blackwell said she saw founding the dance school as her destiny.

“I was born to lead. I was born strong. I was born to be the founder and CEO,” she said.

“My disability does not define me. I am proud of who I am.”

She was nominated for the honor by her friend and teacher Sarah Kennedy, who helped her found Dance Syndrome.

Mrs Kennedy said: “The award shows that, with the right support, people with learning disabilities can be leaders.

“Dance Syndrome works because everything they do is in collaboration with people with learning disabilities.

“It’s great that the university recognizes the importance of this and the crucial role Jen plays in it.”
