There are a lot of great things about staying with my parents in coastal Maine: a huge chef’s kitchen, a gorgeous deck overlooking the water, and someone to do my laundry for a few weeks (thanks, Mom). What’s not great are the old spring mattresses in the guest rooms. Sleep is a huge part of my life — I sleep 9 hours a night or I’m knackered the next day. Plus, those spring mattresses have been known to wreak havoc on your hips, back, shoulders, and neck. So while I always look forward to getting to my parents’ house, I dread crawling into bed.

To say that the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud 2-Inch Mattress Topper ($175, originally $219) has changed my vacation life would be an understatement. Seriously, it has made such a difference in the spring in my step when I’m visiting, it’s like I’m a different person. Read on to find out why.

What I like about the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Topper

Simply put, it’s cozy AF. It took a hard, springy bed and transformed it into a womb-like, doughy paradise. The TEMPUR material, which interestingly enough was developed by NASA, really felt like it was hugging my body and conforming to my curves. I’m a side sleeper, so I’m prone to sore hips and shoulders, but I woke up without aches or pains after adding the topper. I was honestly very surprised that just 2 inches of memory foam could make such a difference, but after I put the topper on, it was like a different bed. I slept like someone who has never heard of “anxiety.” In addition to the feel of the topper, as someone with pretty severe environmental allergies, I was excited that the cover was washable and resistant to dust mites and allergens. Most toppers aren’t washable—or don’t have a washable cover—so that really set this product apart for me.

What is worth mentioning

Some Amazon reviewers noted that the sizing is slightly off, especially for the Twin XL. A few reviewers on the Tempur-Pedic site also mentioned that it gives off a weird smell when you open it – this was not the case for me. I will say that the photos on the retailer sites are a little misleading; most make it appear that the foam topper itself has a built-in cover. This is not the case – it is literally just a slab of yellowish foam and the cover is removable. I guess this makes sense since you can remove the cover and wash it, but it does look a little bulky when you actually put it on your bed. It didn’t affect my sleep, it was just a slightly less pretty look underneath than I had anticipated.

Who is this mattress topper most suitable for?

If you have a bed that you want to be softer, this is for you. I doubt it will make much difference for a bed that is already made with memory foam, so this topper is probably only for people with a spring mattress, futon, daybed, or air mattress.
