6 Nigerian Artists Who Showed Patriotism During Protests

As calls for new protests grow, we spotlight the artists who have spoken out loud in the past.
The #EndSARS movement in Nigeria, which aimed to end police brutality and systemic injustice, saw significant engagement from artists who used their platforms to advocate for change. Here is a list of notable Nigerian artists who actively participated in protests and showed their patriotism through their actions;

1. Burna boy

Burna Boy emerged as a leading voice during the #EndSARS protests. He not only used his music to raise awareness but also participated in the demonstrations. His song 20.10.20, released shortly after the Lekki Toll Gate massacre, captures the emotions and experiences of the protests, making him a prominent figure in the movement.

2. Tiwa Wilde

Tiwa Savage, one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars, joined the protests and used her platform to amplify the voices of the youth. She performed at the protests, encouraging participants and drawing attention to the issues of police brutality and corruption. Her presence and vocal support helped many young Nigerians to join the cause. She also participated in the memorial service that took place a year later.

3. Fall

Falz, a rapper and actor, has been a consistent advocate for social justice. He was actively involved in the #EndSARS protests, using his music and social media presence to speak out against police brutality. His songs often address social issues and he has been seen as a leader of protests, encouraging others to stand up for their rights.

He was also the main catalyst behind the year-long #EndSARS car procession.

4. DJ switch

DJ Switch rose to prominence during the #EndSARS protests when she livestreamed the events at the Lekki Toll Gate, documenting the violence and chaos as it unfolded. Her courage to share the truth garnered international attention and demonstrated the importance of digital activism in the fight for justice. She has reportedly been granted asylum so far.

5. Timi Dakolo

Timi Dakolo, a famous singer, also joined the protests and sang his song Great nation to inspire and uplift protesters. He also shared multiple messages and posts about the protests. His music has always brought messages of hope and unity, and his participation in the protests showed his dedication to advocating for a better Nigeria.

6. Charly boy

Charly Boy, known for his controversial and outspoken nature, has been an activist for decades. He participated in the #EndSARS protests and used his platform to call for accountability and justice. His long-standing commitment to activism has made him a respected elder voice in the movement. He has also started a rebellion for the planned protest on August 1.
