Terrell Davis in stalemate with United over onboard arrest and travel ban

The legal battle between Broncos legend Terrell Davis and United Airlines continued on Tuesday over the Hall of Fame running back’s removal from a flight earlier this month.

Davis was banned from flying by United following the incident, and posted a screenshot of email correspondence from the airline’s Passenger Incident Review Committee on social media.

Denver7 asked United about the ban. The airline released a statement in response, saying the report was filed the day after the incident and that United “discussed with Mr. Davis’ team that (the travel ban) had been lifted.”

However, Davis’ representatives called that claim “clearly false” and said they first learned Tuesday (July 30) that the ban was no longer in effect.

In United’s latest statement to Denver7, the company said it stands by its schedule and that it had communicated with Davis’ team on July 15 and 16.

Davis’ representatives reiterated earlier claims that they would file a lawsuit against United over the incident.

The apparent standoff stems from a July 13 encounter aboard a United plane that was captured on video. Davis was handcuffed and removed from the plane after an altercation with a flight attendant. An investigation later found that Davis had done nothing wrong.

Davis said his son asked for some ice, but the flight attendant either ignored the request or didn’t hear it. Davis said he then “lightly tapped” the flight attendant on the arm to get her attention.

The former Bronco said the flight attendant yelled, “Don’t hit me,” then left the drink cart and walked to the front of the plane. Once the plane landed, Davis said the pilot asked everyone to remain in their seats as the FBI and other law enforcement officers approached and handcuffed Davis.

The former running back wrote on Instagram on Tuesday that the airline “failed on so many levels” in its response.

Attorneys from Stinar, Gould, Grieco & Hensley, representing Davis, criticized the airline for “its lack of public apology to the ENTIRE Davis family, its failure to be publicly transparent about how this horrific event occurred, and its failure to publicly implement significant policy changes to prevent passenger abuse.”

The airline’s media relations team said:

“Mr. Davis received this letter the day after the incident. It was generated by the flight attendant’s report – who is no longer employed by United. The day after the letter was sent, we discussed with Mr. Davis’ team that it had been retracted. We apologized to Mr. Davis for his experience and continue to review our handling of incidents like this to protect our highest priority – the safety of our customers and crew.”

Davis’ team alleged that the airline “used tactics to discredit the timeline of events.”

“Today’s events have only confirmed the urgent need for an overhaul of United’s leadership. United continues to prioritize protecting its image over the safety and experience of its passengers, even at the expense of the reputation and well-being of an innocent family,” the law firm said in a statement.
